Barra is an island in the Outer Hebrides, Scotland, and the second southernmost lived in island there, after the surrounding island of Vatersay to which it is connected by a short causeway. The island is named for Saint Finbarr of Cork. In 2011, the population was 1,174. Gaelic is commonly spoken, as well as at the 2011 Census, there were 761 Gaelic speakers (62% of the population). The Isle of Barra is roughly 60 km2 (23 sq mi) in area, 11 miles (18 km) long and 6 miles (10 km) wide. A single-track road, the A888, runs around the coast of the southern part of the island adhering to the flattest land and also offering the many seaside negotiations. The inside of the island here is hilly as well as unoccupied. The west as well as north of the island has white sandy coastlines including sand created from aquatic shells adjoining the grassed machair, while the south east side has countless rocky inlets.
