Catterick Garrison is a significant garrison and town located three miles south of Richmond in the Richmondshire district of North Yorkshire, England. The town lies inside the Central Richmondshire electoral division of North Yorkshire County Council and divided amongst the Hipswell and Scotton wards of Richmondshire District Council. The town is divided amongst two civil parishes. The southern part of the town, south of a little stream generally known as Leadmill Gill, is inside the civil parish of Scotton. The northern part forms the greater part of the civil parish of Hipswell. Every parish has its personal parish council. It is the biggest British Army garrison in the world, having a population of around 13000 and measuring over 2400 acres. The original intention for Catterick was to become a short-term camp to accommodate two comprehensive divisions with about 40000 men in 2000 huts. However, under plans announced by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) in November 2005, the population of Catterick Garrison is anticipated to grow to more than 25000 by 2020, making it the biggest population centre inside the local area. Lacking a true town centre, the Garrison gained its initial large supermarket in 2000, together with a retail park referred to as ‘Richmondshire Walk’, which also includes a McDonalds, a Poundstretcher plus a Peacocks, amongst other shops. ‘Catterick Leisure Centre’ is a purpose built centre opposite the retail park, opened in July 2009, and it provides a broad spectrum of leisure and fitness facilities such as a swimming pool, as well as a gym, as well as an adjoining public library.
