Catterick Garrison is a major garrison and town located three miles south of Richmond in the Richmondshire district of North Yorkshire, England. The town lies in the Central Richmondshire electoral division of North Yorkshire County Council and divided between the Hipswell and Scotton wards of Richmondshire District Council. The town is divided in between two civil parishes. The southern part of the town, south of a small stream referred to as Leadmill Gill, is in the civil parish of Scotton. The northern part forms the greater part of the civil parish of Hipswell. Each parish has its personal parish council. It is the largest British Army garrison in the world, having a population of about 13000 and measuring more than 2400 acres. The original intention for Catterick was to be a short-term camp to accommodate two comprehensive divisions with around 40000 men in 2000 huts. However, under plans announced by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) in November 2005, the population of Catterick Garrison is anticipated to develop to over 25000 by 2020, making it the biggest population centre within the local area. Lacking a real town centre, the Garrison gained its initial large supermarket in 2000, in addition to a retail park referred to as ‘Richmondshire Walk’, which also contains a McDonalds, a Poundstretcher and also a Peacocks, among other shops. ‘Catterick Leisure Centre’ is a purpose built complex opposite the retail park, opened in July 2009, and it delivers a broad spectrum of leisure and fitness facilities such as a swimming pool, along with a fitness centre, in addition to an adjoining public library.
