Bargoed is a town within the Rhymney Valley, one of the South Wales Valleys. It’s located on the Rhymney River within the county borough of Caerphilly, and it lies on the ancient boundary of Glamorgan and Monmouthshire, with Bargoed historically lying inside the old county of Glamorganshire whereas Aberbargoed was within the old county of Monmouthshire. Initially a market town, Bargoed developed into a successful town soon after the establishment of a colliery in 1903. By 1921, Bargoed had a permanent population of about 17,901; it has been steadily declining since then, because the overall demand for Welsh coal fell. The colliery, which was the subject of a painting by L. S. Lowry, shut down in the 1980s, and its former site is now a country park. The town has lately been undergoing a major redevelopment program, which included a bypass running through the valley with links to the town centre.
