While its importance as an element of garden design is often ignored, fencing is an essential part of both the appearance and practicality of your garden. Garden fencing is likely to differ between the front and rear of properties, with higher and more sturdy wood fencing typically being installed in the rear garden, while the front of the home typically makes use of smaller and more decorative fencing. Fencing for the front of the home tends to have a low height and large gaps between the wooden slats. Also, it is often painted to enhance its decorative effect. Fencing in the back garden is typically used for privacy and to protect the boundaries of a garden, as well as to keep pets or other small animals or wildlife either in or out. Due to this, these styles of fences are roughly 6 feet high and use wooden slats with no spaces in between. Because of the additional height, these fences usually have concrete footings laid in between each section to offer security which will help prevent the fence from blowing over or being destroyed in bad weather. Garden fencing sections are generally constructed from wood. The posts in between the panels are manufactured from either wood, stone, or concrete. More recently, fence panels have started to be manufactured from heavily recycled and environmentally friendly composite materials such as recycled bamboo.

Dalkeith is a town in Midlothian, Scotland, on the River Esk. It was given a burgh of barony in 1401 and a burgh of regality in 1540. The settlement of Dalkeith expanded south-westwards from its 12th-century castle, which is recognized today as Dalkeith Palace. With reference to the 2011 Census, Dalkeith has a permanent population of around 12342 people. The town is formed of 4 distinct parts: Dalkeith proper with its town centre and historic core, with Eskbank to its west and Woodburn to its east. Eskbank is the well-situated sector of Dalkeith with various sizeable Victorian and newer homes. To the south of Eskbank is Newbattle with its abbey. Woodburn is a primarily working class council estate. The structure on High Street of Dalkeith, now referred to as the Tolbooth, started to be utilized as a tolbooth for the administration of the town in the early 18th century. The plaque above the door checks out ‘1648’ however this was taken from another structure and does not mark when the Tolbooth was built. Operating predominantly as a place for law and order, it provided a prison in the west half, a court room on the east, and a dungeon referred to as the ‘black hole’ below ground. In front of the building there is a circle of stones to highlight the spot where the last public hanging in Dalkeith happened in 1827. The town is also home to other prominent properties, namely a Watch Tower at the cemetery, a water tower and a number of iron mills dating back to the early 19th century.
