Wooden decking is an increasingly common option for providing outdoor seating areas in gardens. Due to the natural beauty of wood, they can be very fashionable areas which you can use year round by adding additional heating and illumination. Wooden decking is generally fitted in locations in front of patio or French doors where they can create a seamless transition between interior and exterior spaces. Wooden decking is available in virtually any size or shape to match any area. Curved designs or large areas linked by pathways can create an impressive effect. Wooden decking is fairly easy to install and causes little disruption, especially when compared to alternate options like patio or paving. It could even be installed over the top of a pre-existing patio. It is vital however to be sure that your wooden decking is structurally sound and capable of taking the load of any furniture or plants that you want to use on the decking. There is a variety of species of wood that can be used in wooden decking. Commonly decking is constructed from hardwood, but there are softwoods available that fulfil the durability specifications. As hardwood decking will need maintenance, which commonly includes annual cleaning and staining for weather proofing, composite woods are becoming more popular for use in wooden decking because they are more robust and require significantly less maintenance.

Dunbeath is a village in south-east Caithness, Scotland on the A9 road. It was the birthplace of Neil M. Gunn (1891-1973), author of The Silver Darlings, Highland River etc., a lot of whose stories are set in Dunbeath as well as its Strath. Dunbeath has a really rich historical landscape, the website of many Iron Age brochs as well as a very early medieval monastic site (see Alex Morrison’s historical survey, “Dunbeath: A Cultural Landscape”.) Of Dunbeath’s landscape, Gunn wrote: “These little straths, like the Strath of Dunbeath, have this intimate beauty. In boyhood we get to know every square yard of it. We include it literally and also our memories hold it. Birches, hazel trees for nutting, pools with trout and also an occasionally visible salmon, river-flats with the wind on the bracken and also disappearing bunny scuts, a wide range of wild blossom as well as little bird life, the rising hawk, the unexpected roe, the ancient graveyard, ideas of the people that once lived far inland in straths as well as hollows, the past and also the here and now held in a minute of day-dream.” (‘My Little Bit Of Britain’, 1941.). There is an area museum/landscape analysis centre at the old town institution.
